Tom Wagner reveals new Sports Quarter details with two Birmingham City stadiums planned
The Government has pledged funding for the crucial tramline to Birmingham City's proposed Sports Quarter
Tom Wagner has confirmed plans for the Sports Quarter include an indoor arena and a second stadium.
Ambitious American businessman Wagner wants Birmingham City moved into their new home by 2030 after the Government pledged to fund the all-important tramline from the city centre to the Sports Quarter.
Plans for a site that will be ‘upwards of 125 acres’ have already been drawn up and Knighthead are currently in the process of interviewing architects to design the stadium.
The stadium will be the centrepiece of the Sports Quarter and will have a 62,000 capacity, making it the largest arena of its type in the Midlands, but the complex will be much more than that.
There will be training facilities for all of Blues’ teams, offices, restaurants and entertainment spaces to ensure that it’s used 365 days per year.
And Wagner has now revealed that Knighthead plan to have an indoor arena, which could be used for concerts and sports such as netball – Knighthead recently acquired a stake in the Birmingham Panthers – and a mini stadium to be used by Blues Women and the academy teams.
The Blues chairman told the BBC: “It’s a 62,000-seater stadium, there’s a 15-20,000 seat arena, there will be a show pitch for the academy and the women’s side.
“The goal is to host a whole range of international events, not solely in football, but American football.
“If you look across western Europe you would be hard pressed to find another city with that much land available in walking distance to the city centre where a project of this magnitude can be created and done so in an economically viable way.”
