Blues Linked With Former Pompey Keeper-Coach
Sunday, 23rd May 2021 09:42

Former Portsmouth goalkeeping-coach John Keeley is reportedly being targeted by Town boss Paul Cook.

Keeley left the Pompey staff earlier this week having been in his role for a second stint for the last five years and, according to The Sun on Sunday, is now wanted by the Blues.

The 59-year-old from Plaistow was with Southend, Brighton twice, Oldham, Oxford (loan), Reading (loan), Chester (loan), Colchester, Stockport, Peterborough, Chelmsford and Worthing as a player.

Keeley initially joined Portsmouth as their academy goalkeeping-coach in 2007 after a spell working at Brighton.

He stepped up to coach the senior keepers in 2010 before moving on in 2013. Spells with Blackburn, again at Brighton and in the Chinese Premier League with Guangzhou R&F, where Terry Butcher would later also spend time coaching, followed before he was brought back to Pompey by Cook during his spell as manager at Fratton Park ahead of 2016/17.

Town are after a new goalkeeping-coach with Jimmy Walker having left last month. Academy keeper-coach Carl Pentney filled in in the role in the final few games of the season.

I'ii be even more happy when we eventually see some new players entering the fold although I expect we are waiting for June 1st before things get moving.

The genius that is Paul Cook.Get rid of the players and field the coaches. That'll confuse the opposing teams.Might not win many games but my God it'll be good fun!

I'm not a gambler but I wouldn't mind a bet that negotiations took a long while while the new owners were told what they needed to succeed in there quest to move up the leagues, I reckon there's a list of A grade B grade etc of players & Staff Cookie wants in, I'm looking forward to going back in October November to watch a couple of games

Same thought process here. Sorting out the coaches is one thing, but other Clubs (without our cash) are already starting to get their Summer business done. Bring in a better keeper and this hire is really down the list of priorities. Season ticket sales are at stake here, so we need to see urgent transfer action to generate sales, and to then create a bigger (permitted) war chest!

More moans again. Maybe having specific coaches for different positions will work. Instead of grumbling about the amount of coaches, see if it works first. It wasn't working before.

For all the people moaning on here, it's quite obvious that no new signings are going to happen before Mark Ashton arrives on the 1st June. And why anyone is complaining about getting a proper back room team in is beyond me.

Looks like finding actual quality players is much harder than PC thought. To be fair on last season's results who wants to come anyway. I hope this is not the case and that soon we shall see some decent players signing on the dotted line. Perhaps PC is being more circumspect and taking into account players less prone to injury before buying and in which case this can only be a good thing. I think we all must be patient and trust our new manager and the massive backroom staff that are joining the club. Good luck PC and I just hope it all works out. To be honest still a little concerned based on results towards the end of this season.

At least this coaching hire would actually have some Experience in the role he's been hired for rather than just being a mate and fellow scouser. Progress of a kind I guess.

We absolutely need to get the right staff in !
Our fitness coach left in November and it's no wonder our players were unfit and therefore injury prone !
The L1 season hasn't finished yet and some people are worried we haven't signed anyone ! Chill out and trust Cook to get the right players in - not just any Tom dick and Harry !

Same old moaners

Sixto6 we absolutely need the right staff. We've got Robert's with no previous coaching experience, Wigan's kitman as a first team coach and a man who's recent behaviour includes sending threatening texts to his ex wife and refusing a roadside breath test. It's hardly reassuring is it? Jeffers hiring in particular leaves a bad taste in the mouth and the Wigan kitman is just baffling.

Don't tell me cook is a genius…. There's no evidence for that. If he was a genius he wouldn't still be knocking around the bottom two leagues in his 50's

Chill out guys the season has just finished and we await the arrival of Ashton then onfield personnel will start coming in an experienced keeper coach is needed we just need a quality keeper and keep Holy or Cornell as back up, Ashton will no doubt have been sounding out players while waiting to take up his position so relax enjoy the close season and have a few beers.

@monkey blue - Cook has got a good track record of appointing coaches in Leam Richardson and Anthony Barry, I'm confident that PC knows what he's doing better than some of us !
Yes Jeffers behaviour is obviously unacceptable, let's just hope that he sees moving clubs as a fresh start.
Who knows what role Craney will have ? But I won't worry about it before the season even starts !

With so many rumours and names flying about let's just sit tight, be positive and see what happens !

Good goalie for Chelmsford City but he was at fault for the second goal against Wycombe Wanderers in 1986.

Coach got bricked when we left after losing 2 nil

Sixto6. The worry is Liam Richardson was the good hire. Anyone who thinks Jeffers should be a coach at this club clearly has lower standards than me in terms of personal conduct. However he seems to simply be hiring yes men as there is no track record on any of them. The idea Cook is infallible is ridiculous. The level of delusion on here is just typical of the morons who thought MM was terrible and Hurst was a great idea. I genuinely think Richardson might have been the power behind cooks success as he's looked like a flailing madman so far here.

How can us being linked with a proven goalkeeping coach at a good club cause such a stir in the comments?

You wait until Ashton gets his teeth into finding new signings.
Monkeyblue for heavens sake lad, lighten up, have a little faith will ya?
All this negativity ain't doing your health any good, let the big fellas get who they want in, back room staff, players, coaches, tea ladies (there'll more than one!) and see what (appends eh? If it all goes t*ts up, you can say with pride....told you so!........or, join the happy bus & think what possibly could happen over the next few seasons with a little positivity eh?
I'm on that bus!😁
