Alex Morgan's Tottenham Women debut ends in WSL draw with Reading

Legendary United States striker Alex Morgan came off the bench for her first appearance since moving to the Women's Super League but could not inspire Tottenham as they drew with Reading.

The sides were level at the break after headed goals from Reading's Brooke Chaplen and Ashleigh Neville for Spurs.

Morgan, who gave birth to a daughter on 7 May, joined in September but had not featured until her 70th-minute outing.

However, she could not help Spurs to a first WSL win in six games this term.

The Royals, whose third draw from their six matches sees them remain in sixth place, were the more likely winners in the closing stages, with Lily Woodham going closest with a fierce strike that was well saved by keeper Becky Spencer.

It was an even and open first half at The Hive in which Reading's bright start, which saw Angharad James shoot into the side netting, was rewarded when a delightful Jess Fishlock pass found Emma Mitchell, who in turn teed up Chaplen to head home at the far post.

But Spurs replied when they won three consecutive headers from a corner, with Neville netting from close range with the third.

Morgan looked sharp when she was introduced for her eagerly-awaited debut but did not receive the kind of service she required.

The two-time World Cup winner and 2012 Olympic champion has scored 107 goals in 169 international appearances for the USA, but did not have a noteworthy sight of goal in just over 20 minutes on the pitch.

Tottenham move a point above West Ham after ending a run of four successive league defeats, but they remain in ninth place.
