Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate has his say on Derby financial dispute

Speaking after Middlesbrough’s 1-0 over Reading on Saturday at The Riverside, Middlesbrough manager Woodgate was quizzed on the recent goings on behind the scenes between Chairman Steve Gibson, the EFL and Derby County.

When asked by BBC Radio Tees, the head coach remained tight lipped on the matter:

“I don’t want to get involved, I’ll let the chairman deal with that” he said.

However, Woodgate did say that he would be loyal to his Chairman and back him in his stance against both the EFL and Derby and their Chairman Mel Morris.

“I’m the manager of the football club” he said. “Whatever the chairman does I’ll back him.”

Middlesbrough are looking to sue Derby over a breach of financial rules. Morris was able to use a separate company he owns to buy Pride Park in a deal worth £80m and lease it back to Derby – a loophole in the system according to Gibson.

Derby in turn were able to record a profit for the season, where they would have been on course to record a loss.

The Middlesbrough Chairman and Head Coach have been on the same page in regards to their opinions on financial fair play, and their spending has been limited as a result this recent transfer window. Boro only brought in three new faces with Marc Bola, Marcus Browne and Anfernee Dijksteel arriving for small fees.
