Leeds United defender unlikely to make Burton Albion move as Nigel Clough admits interest

Speaking to Derbyshire Live, Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough has confirmed that the Brewers held talks over a possible move for Leeds United defender Conor Shaughnessy, before option against bringing him to the Pirelli Stadium.

Over the course of the summer transfer window, Leeds United moved on a number of their fringe players. The likes of Caleb Ekuban and Yosuke Ideguchi both made moves away from Elland Road, while young defenders Aapo Halme and Tyler Denton were also moved on.

And, with the transfer window still open for clubs from League One and League Two, defender Conor Shaughnessy could still make a move away, Crisis-hit Bolton Wanderers have been linked with a move for the centre-back, while Burton Albion were also said keen earlier this summer.

Now, speaking about the reported interest in Shaughnessy, Brewers boss Nigel Clough has said they “nearly did something” before opting against a move. A move remains unlikely with Clough saying he can’t see any new faces making their way to the club at the moment.

“We have had chats about Conor,” he said.

“A few weeks ago with Leeds, we nearly did something but we just needed something different. We knew we were taking maybe Ryan Edwards and we needed a midfielder more than a defender.

“We don’t envisage adding anybody at the moment, we are happy with the squad that we’ve got if they can all get fit.”

With the window closing on September 2nd for Burton, it will be interesting to see if circumstances change and the club look to reignite their interest in Shaughnessy or if another club swoops in to sign him up.
